Mike joined Vidett in April 2024 as a client director from The Pensions Regulator (TPR) where he established and led TPR’s Supervision Directorate and was personally involved in many of TPR’s high profile scheme engagements. He has deep experience of negotiating mutually beneficial solutions to complex situations, particularly those related to corporate distress or mergers and acquisitions (M&A).
Mike started his career in banking, with 20 years at Barclays and RBS. He specialised in leading syndicates undertaking large corporate multi-banked distressed debt restructurings. During that time he was seconded to TPR for 9 months from the point of its establishment in 2005, helping develop the clearance regime through engagement on the formative transactions. During the global financial crisis, he was seconded to The Shareholder Executive within the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy, leading negotiations on support for the automotive industry and engaging to ensure appropriate treatment of distressed businesses by banks.
Mike joined TPR in 2012 as a Corporate Financial Analyst, soon taking responsibility for that team. In 2016 he became Director of Case Management, which became Director of Supervision. He was responsible for establishing TPR’s current approach to Supervision. Within these roles, he led many of the high-profile scheme engagements TPR has undertaken. He has particular focus on engaging with DB schemes with employers experiencing corporate distress or M&A transactions. He was also involved in the authorisation and supervision of Master Trusts, led TPR’s engagement with superfunds and emerging models and was involved in the development of the DB funding code. He was a member of TPR’s Regulatory Decisions Committee.
During his career, Mike has built deep understanding of issues facing DB schemes of all sizes, Master Trusts, CDC and Superfunds. He has significant experience of leading negotiations, using a joint problem-solving approach to reach sustainable solutions. He enjoys bringing stakeholders together, using clear, positive communication to solve problems in a way that is equitable for all.
Away from work, Mike enjoys running and generally keeping fit. He is a regular park runner who has completed two marathons.
